At British Oxygen Corp... Tri-Stack roof exhaust systems improve safety, cut costs, and enhance efficiency for laboratory fume hoods

Strobic Air's Tri-Stack laboratory exhaust fans have made a major contribution towards health, safety, and cost-effectiveness as part of a unique "comfort system" at The BOC (British Oxygen Corp.) Group. BOC is an international organization with its main research facility located in five buildings on a 50-acre site at Berkeley Heights, NJ. There are over 100 individual research laboratories at this facility, some in 50 year old buildings.
BOC produces liquid nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and other gases for hospitals, food processing, and fabrication industries. Its research labs contain many different kinds of fume hoods to provide safe environments for conducting experiments. One facility, in particular, had eight lab rooms located on two levels, with individually exhausted fume hoods. Concerns of BOC's management facility included compliance with OSHA laboratory safety standards, insufficient make-up air and exhaust air capacity, and the overall indoor air quality.

To solve these problems, BOC called in an experienced, well known design and build contracting firm - Monsen Engineering Company of Fairfield, NJ. Monsen's solution in this $650,000 project reduced overall exhaust requirements in both laboratory facilities from 24,000 CFM to 12,000 CFM. Reduced airflow saved BOC $37,500 for the first modified laboratory hoods installed; of this, $12,375 is projected for electrical cooling

and energy savings, and $25,125 for heat savings. The entire project, after the facility planning process was completed, took only two months to design and about six months to substantially complete. BOC Site Engineering Manager said, "Once Monsen came up with the design that we bought, there were no change orders. The project is now fully operational and the fume hoods are working the way they're supposed to."

"At a conservative 4% fuel escalation per year...over $200,000 will be saved in five years which represents a simple return on investment of nearly 6% per annum. " Brian Mornan, Monsen Engineering Company.
